Time for GOP to Abort ‘Pro-Life’ Movement

Analysis by Kyle A. Lohmeier

A pair of recent news stories about a pair of recent court rulings reminded me that there exists in this nation, still to this day, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom, an anti-abortion movement. In 2016 there are still human beings living within the United States who believe the government has some right to tell a woman what she can or cannot do with her own body. Frankly, it’s maddening.

Worse still, some of these idiots end up in office, elected by other busybodies. From there, they sign laws written by other idiot busybodies that seek to oppress women’s rights. Then, they get sued. So, they have to defend their idiot laws in court, wasting taxpayer money in the process. Then, they lose, so they appeal, and waste yet more money.

Late last month, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed out Mississippi’s idiot law that barred healthcare providers that performed abortions from participating in the state’s Medicaid program. Now, if any state wants to pare back or eliminate their entitlement programs, I’m all for it. Doing so selectively with an eye toward oppression women’s rights, however, is just indefensible – as the court correctly ruled.

“I believe the law was the right thing to do and I will continue to stand with the legislature and people of Mississippi who do not want their hard-earned money going to the largest abortion provider in the nation,” wrote Mississippi’s idiot Republican Governor Phil Bryant on Facebook after the ruling.

Yes, go ahead, appeal it to the Supreme Court and then talk about being a good steward of Mississippians hard-earned money.

Also late last month U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson issued an injunction against an imbecilic Alabama law that barred abortion clinics from operating within 2,000 feet of a school and put other arbitrary restrictions on certain abortion procedures. According to the Associated Press, similar laws have also been blocked in Kansas and Oklahoma.

“’It’s long past time for our elected officials to stop wasting time and taxpayer money passing laws that violate women’s constitutional rights and start focusing on the needs of women and families in this state,’ said Susan Watson, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama, which filed the challenge,” reads a portion of the AP story.

Indeed. Insisting on refighting this lost battle over and over and over again is one of the reasons why the GOP is headed to a disastrous showing a week from today. Republicans are steadily losing what political relevance they still have because they cannot seem to recognize the utter political irrelevance of the “pro-life” movement they embrace. At this point, the GOP finds itself in the same situation they seek to put women in – they’re carrying something that’s become a threat to their own life and now must choose to have it removed, or die.
